Paying for Failure

Look, we all know times is hard all around. We've all seen the graphs of rising costs of living compared to the rising but much more slowly average wages. We've heard the term once in a generation recession so often that it plays on a loop in our heads.

This is bad in all industries, but I don't know very much about most industries, so I'm only going to talk about the one. There is a very specific reason why economic downturns are bad for the arts.

Making art, in any form, involves failure. Like, a lot of failure. And if artists are going to make a living, someone needs to pay for that failure.
